Reading beneficial literature during the summer helps students retain what they gained over the school year and develops writing skills, knowledge, self-esteem, vocabulary, comprehension, focus, and memory. Best practices in promoting reading at home include:
- Reading with your child(ren)
- Bringing your child(ren) to the public library
- Reading a paper form of reading material in front of their child(ren)
- Showing and explaining what you are reading to your child(ren)
- Using the electronic book program from a subscription or the library
- Prioritizing reading and playing over any screen time
