For the child in grades 1 through 5, the elementary program places a strong emphasis on mastery and application of basic skills, while also providing enrichment and remedial activities to help each child experience success. Additionally, the elementary program offers many activities beyond the basics to minister to the whole child, such as music, art, physical education, and library skills.
Research shows that the more students read, the higher their achievement. Students learn phonics in the early grades, and young readers are encouraged to become lifelong readers through a variety of programs and contests. The reading program is supplemented with Scholastic Reading Counts, a reading comprehension software program for grades 1-5.
Elementary students receive hands-on experience with various forms of hardware and software. Classes have access to the computer lab for whole-group instruction, and students may use their classroom computers to carry out assigned tasks.
Elementary students have the opportunity to participate in Blazerbots Jr., which serves as the introductory level of our K-12 Robotics program. As students’ robotics knowledge grows, the more advanced LEGO Club allows them to write code and program motorized vehicles that simulate real life situations. The elementary Robotics clubs emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, building, and programming.
