Library Skills

Research Skills

A library research skills program is offered to middle school students. The goal is to teach students how to find information and use various reference sources, such as the online encyclopedias, online catalog, almanac, atlas, encyclopedia, thesaurus, dictionary, Bartlett's Quotations, etc.

Super Sleuth

Super Sleuth

Super Sleuth (grades 3-5) challenges students to solve clues by finding keywords, selecting the correct reference books, and using online search techniques. Thinking skills as well as reference skills are involved. Students may use online encyclopedias for every other set of clues, but they may not use Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, etc. After the clues have been posted for two weeks, the media specialist announces the winners and talks with the class about the different ways to find the answer.

Read and Recycle

Read and Recycle

Parents may donate books their children have outgrown to the media center. The Read and Recycle cart is available outside the library entrance. Books may be purchased for $.10 - $1.00.

Reading Counts

Reading Counts is a software program that monitors and improves students' reading skills through quizzes which test reading comprehension. Through lexile scores, students are matched to age-appropriate books that they can read with success. After reading a book, students can take a quiz in their classroom, the computer lab, or the media center. There are prizes for meeting the reading goal each quarter and at the end of the year! Books that have a Reading Counts quiz can be identified in Destiny, the online catalog, or by the blue star on the spine of the book in the media center.
